An American Recital

Casa Fernando Pessoa
Fri 31 Jan 18:30
Entrada Livre

The term American music has many meanings. Genres as diverse as Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Country, Broadway, Rock, Disco, Hip Hop, House… And what about music from the classical tradition with European roots? In this field, the overwhelming majority of audiences stick to Leonard Bernstein. But there’s plenty to discover, of course. With the “simple” resource of a trumpet, an English horn and a piano, the Metropolitan Soloists invite us to take a closer look. The names of Aaron Copland and Elliott Carter are unavoidable references in the history of 20th century music. In Quiet City, Copland has brought together excerpts he originally composed for a play about the existential dilemmas of a businessman who has renounced the idealism of his youth and his aspiration to be a poet. Also from 1940, Carter’s Pastoral reveals the composer’s more affectionate side. From Halsey Stevens and Joseph Turrin, we also hear two repertoire pieces that challenge the technical prowess of trumpet players.
