Although they may look similar, no two musical instruments are exactly alike. The flute is different from the piccolo. The trumpet is different from the flugelhorn. And the violin is different from the viola. Each has its own unique identity.
The viola is slightly larger than the violin and considerably smaller than the cello. But the differences go beyond size: its sound is unmistakably its own. By varying bow speed, articulation and pressure on the strings, violists are constantly searching for the instrument’s “true voice”. Much of the orchestral repertoire entrusts the viola with the inner parts of the harmony, a seemingly secondary role that is nevertheless essential to the richness and balance of the ensemble.
Yet when the viola takes centre stage, it reveals remarkable expressive possibilities. Few instruments combine such a dark, warm lower register with such rich resonance in the upper range. Shall we discover the wonderful music the viola has to offer?
