Learning Outcomes

> In-depth study of a selection of topics and repertoires which are representative of the History of Western Music

> Identification and characterization of key musical categories, such as: Concert, Symphony, Opera, Chamber Music, Lied and Music for films and theater

> Exploration of the social, political and cultural conditions that originate or influence the process of musical creation and interpretation

> Creation of dynamics within group research, aiming at obtaining and processing information collected from different types of sources

> Embed the results of historical research into musical performance

> Acquaint students with processes of scientific writing in the field of music historiography


The discipline aims to increase the level of knowledge on several themes and repertoires of Western Music History, based on a selection of case studies, covering different chronological periods: Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, 20th Century and Contemporary Music. Each case study will reflect a different historical approach to the chosen theme, namely in terms of artistic and intellectual culture, social practices of composition, interpretation, production and musical enjoyment, political situation of the epoch and its specific circumstances, composer’s biographical framework and formal and style of the work (s).

Teaching Methodologies

Departing from the selection of case studies undertaken at the beginning of the academic semester, depending on the size of classes and student’s profiles, the stages of group work will be planned, leading to the completion of specific research projects (oral or written). In the course of the interim stages of presentation and discussion of results, follow-up sessions will be held by the teacher, aiming to develop the selected themes, as well as clarifying student’s questions.
