Lusíadas

Aula Magna da Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa
Thu 10 Jun 21:00

To celebrate Portugal Day and the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís Vaz de Camões, Ópera do Castelo and the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra are venturing into uncharted waters, both in the natural and human worlds and in the world of music. They celebrate a love that transcends death itself, and the poet’s poetry and art, through the world premiere of the symphonic poem *Lusíadas*, commissioned from composer Nuno da Rocha by Ópera do Castelo in 2024. Drawing on Camões’ epic, the music and singing evoke the Portuguese people’s journey across the world, the human condition and their boundless curiosity in the face of the unknown. And because it is also on a sea voyage that Tristan and Isolde fall irrevocably in love, this concert also features the prelude to the opera in which Richard Wagner delved most deeply into the mysteries of love. Love and the Sea, together, heading towards the unknown.
