Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to establish continuity between the Romantic style and the principal existing musical languages of the first half of the 20th century, namely the Second Viennese School and the music of Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartok. The main musical languages and techniques in use at that time are studied.
Syllabus
> The transition from Romanticism to the 20th century, starting from Beethoven’s legacy, the latest works by Liszt and the music of Wagner and Mahler.
> The Impressionism and the Second Viennese School; Stravinsky and Bartok;
> Other perspectives on rhythm, harmony and musical form, including techniques that use the Golden Rule or the Fibonacci Series;
Teaching Methodologies
The course consists of fourteen one and a half hour-long sessions. A list of repertory will be previously sent to students. Students, in each session, analyze one work (or a segment of a work). Whenever necessary, technical aspects related to the given subject are addressed separately.
