Artistic Direction

Pedro Neves is currently Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.

At the same time, he performs the functions of Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Clássica de Espinho. He was Principal Conductor of the Orquestra do Algarve between 2011 and 2013, and later, Associate Conductor of the Orquestra Gulbenkian, between 2013 and 2018.

He is regularly invited to direct Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra Clássica do Sul, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, Orquestra Sinfónica of the State of São Paulo, Symphony Orchestra of Porto Alegre, Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg and the Royal Philharmonia of Galicia.

In the field of contemporary music, he has collaborated with the Sond’arte Electric Ensemble, with which he has performed premieres of several Portuguese and foreign composers, touring South Korea and Japan. Also with the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa and the Grupo Síntese de Música Contemporânea.

He is the founder of Camerata Alma Mater, a group dedicated to the interpretation of repertoire for string orchestra and with which he has received praise from the public and specialized critics.

Pedro Neves began his musical studies in Águeda, his hometown. He studied cello with Isabel Boiça, Paulo Gaio Lima and Marçal Cervera; respectively, at the Conservatório de Música de Aveiro, at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra (Lisbon) and at the Escuela de Música Juan Pedro Carrero (Barcelona), with the support of the Gulbenkian Foundation.

With regard to Orchestral Conducting, he studied with Jean-Marc Burfin, obtaining a Licentiate degree at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra, with Emilio Pomàrico, in Milan, and with Michael Zilm, to whom he was an assistant.

As a result of his career, his artistic personality is marked by the depth, coherence and seriousness of his musical interpretation.
