Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony marked a historic turning point, elevating the symphony into an epic drama on a grand scale, portraying heroic ideals of struggle, crisis and triumphant transcendence. It infused the score with a powerful affirmation of ideals, embodying a compelling narrative conception. In short, it transformed the way music was heard and understood.
Completed two years later, in 1806, the Violin Concerto did not achieve the same immediate impact. It took several decades to gain recognition, but it eventually became one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire. Leading the Metropolitana Lisbon Orchestra are two outstanding violinists: Enrico Onofri, appearing this time in his equally distinguished role as conductor, and Sergej Krylov, whose refined virtuosity brings the solo part vividly to life.
