Tchaikovsky premiered his first symphony in 1868 in Moscow. At the age of 28, he was announcing three influences that would accompany his entire career: the formal solidity of the classical tradition, romantic voluntarism and the archetypes of an idealized Russian identity. He was also willing to challenge established conventions in order to grow and assert himself as a composer. In four movements, he evoked inspiring winter landscapes and moods that still spark our imagination today. In this program, we also have the opportunity to learn about a concerto for violin, viola and orchestra composed by Britten when, in 1932, he was still studying at the Royal College of Music and was only 18 years old. The score remained forgotten in a drawer until about three decades ago. The musical direction and solo parts are entrusted here to a new generation of proven musicians, all of them trained at the Metropolitana academy.
