Wind Ensemble

Wind instrument ensembles have a long tradition. In Portugal, the important work carried out by military bands and philharmonic orchestras, created in associations dating back to the 19th century, stands out. But its reach is even greater. It dates back centuries, in festive or ceremonial contexts. It then grew thanks to technical innovations in instrument construction and the “new taste” cultivated in the stately homes of central Europe in the second half of the 18th century. These wind ensembles were called Harmonie. On this occasion, the young musicians of the Metropolitana higher academy bring these sounds to the MACAM chapel. They begin with a solemn Mozart. They continue with the more convivial side of Beethoven and the good humor of Lachner. They finish with Gershwin’s Summertime, the same melody we know from the voices of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong.
