Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is Gustav Mahler’s best-known work. This is largely due to the recurring use of the fourth movement, the Adagietto, on cinema screens, in particular in Luchino Visconti’s 1971 adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novel Death in Venice. But there are countless reasons to get to know everything else in detail. The Fifth Symphony is a vast portrait of human existence. It is Viennese expressionism at the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. It is a slow journey that takes us from the tragic mood of a funeral march to the positive exaltation of the final movement. In this concert, in which the Orquestra Académica Metropolitana joins forces with the Orquestra Municipal de Sintra D. Fernando II, the Sinfonia Extraída dos Fragmentos de Uma Cena Marítima by nineteenth-century Porto composer José Francisco Arroio will also be given its modern premiere.
