Schubert was a great composer of melodies – more than six hundred songs that established musical romanticism. But he was also a classicist, in the Vienna tradition. Here we revisit his Third Symphony, in which this latter facet predominates, with formal rigour and resourceful dialogues between the different groups. Skilful and creative solutions surprise us at every turn of the page. And because it’s all about classicism, this programme opens with Haydn’s first cello concerto, albeit transfigured in the trumpet of Sergei Nakariakov, a virtuoso performer who has been adding worlds to his instrument’s repertoire. On a more irreverent note, he is then joined by pianist Vasco Dantas to play Chostakovich’s double concerto. Eclectic, humorous… perhaps satirical, this work mixes popular and classical sounds. Towards the end, there is a jocular quotation of the theme from a Piano Sonata by Haydn.
