In this programme, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra performs music that has a place of honour in the collective imagination of all of us. It all begins with the orchestral overture to Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. The mysterious atmosphere at the beginning, with its sinister chords and ringing eardrums, doesn’t bode well for the main character. Next, the famous Symphony No. 40,
by the same composer. We never tire of hearing it – and not just the main melody, but everything else too. Finally, elves, fairies and Greek heroes inhabit A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Shakespeare’s literary fantasy was thus transposed into music by the young Mendelssohn.
