The Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra is kicking off another season of concerts in style. More precisely, in the style of Joseph Haydn. Haydn was a friendly man with a sense of humour and, above all, enthusiastic about his craft. This contrasts with the snobbishness and stigma of seriousness that are sometimes associated with classical music, of which he was a pioneer. Like so many others who received his legacy, Lopes Graça called him “Papa” Haydn. In 1980 he dedicated his Sinfonieta to him. As early as 1917, Prokofiev had composed a symphony “in his own way”, the Sinfonia Classica. The Sinfonia Concertante, which opens this programme, has the curiosity of featuring four soloists at the head of the orchestra. It was a gesture of courtesy to the musicians of a London orchestra during Haydn’s first stay in the English capital in 1792.
