With artistic direction by violist Diemut Poppen, the Cantabile Festival has stood out, since its first edition in 2010, on the chamber music scene in Portugal. To a large extent, this quality rests on the high calibre of the guest musicians who, in this case, appear as soloists leading the orchestra. Diemut Poppen herself joins violinist Christel Lee to perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. In turn, cellist Alexander Chaushian brings us the striking Cello Concerto No. 1 by Alexey Shor, a 2018 work that, across three movements, traces a stylistic mosaic ranging from the classical to the tango, taking in the Baroque and nineteenth-century virtuosity along the way. Opening the programme, the OML performs a pivotal work by Mozart himself: in Symphony No. 29, the composer combined technical refinement with a sense of entertainment and an expressive tension that opened the way to greater heights.
