Aram Khachaturian and Alexander Arutiunian were born at the beginning of the Soviet period in Armenia, a country situated halfway between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, south of the Caucasus mountain range. Khachaturian was a pioneer in integrating Caucasian folklore with the European classical tradition. He thus established a bridge between East and West from the perspective of a people who had suffered the atrocities of the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923. Arutiunian followed in his footsteps, combining the resources of the classical repertoire with insinuating melodies and traces of exoticism. These two trios of his exemplify that charisma. Then, a thousand kilometers to the southwest, already in the also suffering lands of the Levant, Nuno Silva and José Pereira recover the opening of the CD they recorded in 2022, now in the company of pianist Dana Radu. In Aleppo, Luís Tinoco evokes with deep emotion – but also a glimmer of hope – the most recent tragedy in Syria.
