Tracing a correspondence between the chamber works written for string instruments and the three periods that historians distinguish in Brahms’ creative maturity, we associate the two sextets to the first, the three quartets to the middle, and the two quintets to the last phase. In this program, the Metropolitan Soloists propose to revisit the first two, although in the opposite chronological direction. They begin with String Quartet No. 2, a sophisticated writing style that met the demands of the educated public in Vienna in the 1870s. We then go back to 1859-1860, when Brahms was still in the service of Prince Leopold II in Detmold. In keeping with the informal court atmosphere, popular melodic designs over evocative accompaniments recur in the score.
