Premiered 200 years ago, the Choral Symphony is one of the most influential human creations of contemporary times. With its unprecedented formal complexity, its horizon-breaking orchestration and its boldness in the face of prevailing artistic and ideological assumptions, it became grandiose – truly monumental. Curiously, the final movement questioned the very concept of a symphony by adding four solo voices and a choir to the orchestra. This is when we hear the famous Ode to Joy, a free adaptation of Schiller’s poem that extols the values of freedom and brotherhood among men.
