For centuries, the role of women in classical music was very small. We now know that this was never due to a lack of talent or aptitude, but rather to social, moral and political conditioning. In this respect, the 20th century brought extraordinary changes in many areas. Curiously, classical music today is an interesting example of gender representation. And so it is in this programme. In a dialogue with Beethoven’s Seventh, the OML brings conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm to the stage to perform a recreation of the famous melody from the second movement of the symphony, written by Swedish composer Britta Byström. Flutist Janete Santos then joins in to play a Concerto that Anne Victorino d’Almeida also composed last decade.
