The surname Bach goes far beyond the composer of the St. Matthew Passion. It’s the name of a very large German family that, between the 16th and 19th centuries, brought more than half a hundred excellent musicians to the world. The best known, the aforementioned Johann Sebastian, was the father of sixteen children, some of whom also distinguished themselves as composers, such as Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel, who join him in this program in sonatas with transverse flute that enchanted illustrious salons in 18th century Europe. This was the case in the rococo salon of Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. Johann Joachim Quantz, one of the most renowned flautists of the time, shared duties there with Carl Philipp Emanuel.
