When all the timbric possibilities of a single instrument are explored, as in the case of the saxophone, the result can be surprising. This ensemble sets out, therefore, to discover the genius of composers and pieces that were written in various eras of musical creation, showing the thousand potentialities of a single wind instrument.
The Metropolitana´s Saxophone Ensemble (ESM), conducted by professor João Pedro Silva, is one of the ensembles from Metropolitana’s educational project, namely the Metropolitana’s Professional School (EPM), trying to create a solid relationship between performance and musical pedagogy.
Parallel to the classroom work, this ensemble performs regularly in concert at Centro Cultural de Belém, São Jorge Cinema, Centro Cultural de Ílhavo, RTP, Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Faro, Festival Internacional de Saxofone de Palmela, Festival Música nas Praças, Festival Música NOVA and ESMAE International Saxofone Week.
The Metropolitana’s Saxophone Ensemble was selected (among more than 600 applications) to be part of the program of the 17th World Saxophone Congress, the most important event, worldwide, around the saxophone, in 2015, in Strasbourg. The ESM recorded and edited a CD, with Antena 2 support, with original Portuguese music for this formation.
