Sax Ensemble

Sax Ensemble

When exploring all the timbral possibilities of a single instrument, as is the case with the saxophone, the result can be surprising. This ensemble thus sets out to discover the genius of composers and works written across various periods of musical creation, showcasing the myriad potentialities of a single wind instrument.

The Metropolitana Sax Ensemble (Ensemble de Saxofones da Metropolitana – ESM), directed by Professor João Pedro Silva, is one of the groups originating from the educational project of AMEC / Metropolitana, namely from the Escola Profissional Metropolitana (EPM), aiming to create a solid relationship between performance and music pedagogy.

Alongside their classroom work, this ensemble regularly performs concerts at the Centro Cultural de Belém, Cinema São Jorge, Centro Cultural de Ílhavo, RTP, Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Faro, the Palmela International Saxophone Festival, Festival Música nas Praças, Festival Música NOVA, and ESMAE International Saxophone Week.

The Metropolitana Sax Ensemble was selected (from over 600 applications) to be part of the program of the 17th World Saxophone Congress, the most important global event focused on the saxophone, held in 2015 in Strasbourg. The ESM recorded and released a CD, supported by Antena 2, featuring original Portuguese music for this formation.
