Born on December 17th 1994, in Oliveira do Bairro (Aveiro), Daniel da Rocha Canas began his musical studies in Banda Filarmónica da Mamarrosa, continuing later in Escola d’Artes da Bairrada, where he finished the 5th degree of conservatory, having as teachers Ricardo Matosinhos and Nuno Lima. Later, he joined the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho, in the class of teachers J. Bernardo Silva, Dário Ribeiro, Nuno Costa and Fiammetta Facchini. In 2010 he won the 1st place in the Iberian competition “Terras de la Salette”, in the Juvenile Category. Throughout his training, he participated in masterclasses conducted by Hermann Baumann, Ab Koster, Nury Guarnaschelli, Hélder Vales, Sören Hermansson, Abel Pereira, Jonathan Luxton, David Johnson, Jeffrey Nelsen, Arkady Shilkloper and Froydis Ree Wekre, among others.

He has worked with various conductors, including Yan Van der Roost, Alex Schillings, Lorenzo Della Fonte, José Rafael Pascoal Vilaplana, Pedro Neves, Sérgio Alapont, Martin Lutz, Luís Carvalho, António Saiote, Christoph König, Ernest Shell, Olari Elts, John Storgårds, Osvaldo Ferreira, Baldur Brönnimann, Pedro Amaral, Jonas Alber, Marco Parissoto, Donato Cabrera, Enrique Bátiz, Case Scaglione, Valentín Uryupin, Jesús Medina and Sascha Goetzel, among others. In chamber music, he is a founding member of the Oporto Horn Quartet, winner of the first edition of the “Trompas Lusas” competition, and of the Clas5ic Wind Quintet, with whom he participated in the Euroclassical programme and Harmos Festival, performing in prestigious venues in the north of the country, such as Casa da Música and Teatro Helena Sá e Costa. He collaborated with Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Clássica de Espinho, Orquestra Clássica do Centro, Orquestra Sinfónica da ESMAE, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa and Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Berlin. He held the position of CoPrincipal in the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco-Mexico in the 2018/19 season, having performed several concerts across America and Europe.

Currently, he is Soloist A and Head of Suit at the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.

He has participated in several tours, having the privilege of playing in halls such as the Philharmonie Essen, Konzerthaus Berlin, Gasteig Munich, Konzerthaus Vienna, San Francisco Symphony, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Auditório Nacional de Música-Madrid and Berliner Philharmonie. He has recorded for the stations RTP, RDP, Antena2, RTVE, C7 Jalisco and PSB America, alongside great names of the international musical panorama, such as Plácido Domingo, Pacho Flores, Ester Yoo and Carlos Prieto, or, on a more erudite national level, Azeitonas, Rita Redshoes and João Gil.

As a natural horn player, he was a founding member of the baroque orchestra Musicum Portucalense, under the direction of Professor Hugues Kesteman. He also participated in the official reopening of the Rivoli Theatre, performing with the National Ballet Company, conducted by Massimo Mazeo.

He graduated from ESMAE (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo – Porto), in the class of the teachers Bohdan Sebestik, Hugo Carneiro, Ricardo Matosinhos, Hélder Vales, Nuno Vaz and Abel Pereira.

He is currently attending the last year of the master course in Performance at ESMAE.
