Nuno Cardoso

Chamber Music

Nuno Cardoso, born in Lisbon, graduated from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra with a degree in Cello Performance, where he studied under Paulo Gaio Lima, and later completed his Master’s studies in Cello at the Musikhögskolan i Malmö of Lund University, in the class of Torleif Thedéen.

Having begun his cello studies at the Fundação Musical dos Amigos das Crianças with Luís Estêvão da Silva and Luís Sá Pessoa, he later attended masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Márcio Carneiro, Xavier Gagnepain, Hans Jørgen Jensen, and Rainer Zipperling. In the field of chamber music, he studied with Paul Wakabayashi, Paulo Pacheco, Olle Sjöberg, and Hans Pålsson. He worked on Baroque music interpretation with Peter Spissky and Baroque cello with Diana Vinagre.

Co-founder of MPMP – Movimento Patrimonial pela Música Portuguesa, he was a member of the editorial board of Glosas, a music magazine. As an orchestral musician, he has collaborated with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and regularly appears as a guest with various Portuguese orchestras.

With a special dedication to chamber music, he has been developing a duo with pianist Duarte Pereira Martins, notably performing in the Um Músico, um Mecenas recital series at the Museu Nacional da Música, in Lisbon, on the historical cellos by H. Lockey Hill (ca. 1800, Suggia Collection) and J. J. Galrão (1769, Royal Collection), both currently housed in that instrumental collection. His performances also include recitals in Denmark and Sweden, as well as the 202 Campos Elísios project. He was a founding member of the piano quartet Kvar Ensemble and is a member of the string quartet of Ensemble MPMP. For the Melographia Portugueza collection, he recorded the first-ever discographic edition of Ruy Coelho’s Piano Trio, Op. 3.

As a teacher, he has recently been lecturing in Chamber Music and the Cello Section at the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana.
