After completing his studies at the Professional and Artistic School of Vale do Ave, Nelson Alves joined the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts of Porto, where he deepened his study of the oboe with Ricardo Lopes, having completed his Degree and later a Masters in Musical Performance area. He attended several improvement courses in Portugal and Spain, Holland and Germany, having the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned oboists of today.
He taught at several schools and at various levels of education, from Initiation to Higher Education. He currently teaches at the Superior School of Applied Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco and at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra.
As a soloist, he has performed with the Filarmonia das Beiras, the Artave Orchestra, the ESMAE Symphony, the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group, the Sinfonietta Köln and the Orchestra of the Superior Conservatory of Music in Geneva.
Between 1999 and 2001, he joined the Filarmonia das Beiras and, between 2002 and 2005, he collaborated intensively with the Orquestra Nacional do Porto. He also played with the most diverse national ensembles and orchestras. He is 1st Auxiliary Soloist at the Gulbenkian Orchestra since 2006.
