Miguel Costa

Clarinet

Miguel Costa, from Seixal, took his first steps in music at the age of just five, at the Sociedade Filarmónica Timbre Seixalense, with António Menino. He studied at Escola Profissional de Artes da Beira Interior, Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, in the classes of professors Luís Gomes, Nuno Antunes, Nuno Gonçalves, Etienne Lamaison, Nuno Silva and Paulo Gaspar. He has participated in masterclasses with some of the world’s most renowned clarinettists, including Guy Deplus, Yehuda Gilad, Antony Pay, Lorenzo Coppola, Haken Rosengren, Philipe Cuper, Romain Guyot, Pascual Martinez, Jonathan Cohler and Michel Portal, among others.

He has won several awards in various national and international competitions. He was the winner of the Paços Premium Competition (advanced level) in 2008, winner of the Soloist Competition with the Metropolitan Academic Orchestra in 2010, finalist in the Marco Fiorindo Competition (Italy) in 2010, received 2nd Prize in the José Augusto Alegria International Competition in 2011, was a finalist in the 2nd Lisbon International Clarinet Competition in 2013 and received 2nd Prize in the Terras de La Salette International Competition in 2014.

Miguel Costa is a regular guest performer with various orchestras, such as the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Almada Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has been a member of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra since 2012 and a member of the MPMP Ensemble. Although brief, his career has already been recognised on RTP 2’s ‘Iniciativa’ programme and mentioned in Culturgest magazine. As a soloist, he has collaborated with the Metropolitan Academic Orchestra, the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra and the MPMP Ensemble, among other projects.

He teaches at the Sementes OCP project, at the 6 de Maio Social Centre, and is a teacher at the Conservatório de Música da Metropolitana and the Academia de Música de Almada.
