Joana Tavares studied in the Viola Class of professors Jean-Loup Lecomte and Luís Norberto Silva at Conservatório de Música do Porto, where she was born. She later entered the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra da Metropolitana in the class of professor Paul Wakabayashi, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree, and subsequently attended the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, where she earned a Master’s degree in Music Teaching. She holds a postgraduate degree from the Escola de Altos Estudos Musicais de Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in Orchestral Specialization, and during the 2016-2017 season collaborated regularly with the Orquestra Real Filarmonia da Galiza.

She has attended masterclasses with violists Yuval Gotlibovich, Gérard Caussé, Krzysztof Chorzelski, and Ana Bela Chaves, with whom she works regularly. She has collaborated, among others, with the Orquestra Real Filarmonia da Galiza, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Sinfónica da Casa da Música do Porto, and Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa. She has performed as a soloist with the Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, under conductor Pedro Carneiro, and with the Orquestra de Jovens de Santa Maria da Feira, under conductor Ernst Schelle.

She was awarded 1st Prize in the Chamber Music Category at the Concurso Gilberto Paiva, 1st Prize at the Internal Competition of the Conservatório de Música do Porto, and 3rd Prize at the Concurso Paços Premium. Since 2013, she has been a faculty member at the Conservatório de Música da Metropolitana.
