Euphonium

Gonçalo Marques began his musical studies at the age of eight. In 1998, he entered the Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa, in the Tuba / Euphonium class of Professor Ilídio Massacote and later Professor Nuno Fernandes.
He has collaborated and participated in wind orchestra workshops, notably with the Orquestra Nacional de Sopros dos Templários, the Orquestra de Sopros do Oeste, and the Orquestra de Jovens Músicos do Concelho de Águeda, as well as with the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil and the Orquestra Sinfonietta. Since 2011, he has been the euphonium teacher at the Estágio Nacional de Orquestra de Sopros de Portel. In 2012, he was invited to coordinate the brass section of the IX Estágio da Banda Sinfónica da Covilhã. He led the tuba and euphonium section in the three editions of the Orquestra de Sopros Veteras workshops, performing as a soloist in the 2nd edition in 2014.

In 2008, he won 2nd Prize at the I Concurso de Terras de La Sallette in Oliveira de Azeméis. In 2007, he entered the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, completing his bachelor’s degree in euphonium in 2011, under Professor Adélio Carneiro. At the same school, he earned his Master’s degree in Music Education in 2018. He is a member of the trio 2 Chamadas Não Atendidas, alongside an oboe and a piano, seeking new ideas and developing his creativity through the composition of original works. In 2020, he released his first album. He is also a member of the tuba quartet Tupho Ensemble.

Currently, he serves as Euphonium Instrumentalist in the Banda de Música da Força Aérea, where he has played since 2004, holding the positions of Section Leader and Instrument Teacher. He regularly collaborates with the Big Band Lisbon Swingers, conducted by Claus Nymark, where he plays trombone.

Alongside his performance career, he teaches Euphonium and Chamber Music at the Escola Profissional Metropolitana (since September 2010) and at the Academia de Música de Óbidos (since 2013). In 2014/15, he was Tuba/Euphonium teacher at the Conservatório de Música das Caldas da Rainha. Since September 2020, he has been a professor at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in the Chamber Music department. With the aim of promoting and motivating the euphonium community in Portugal, he has been organizing and teaching workshops, masterclasses, and competitions across the country, and is an active member of the Associação Portuguesa de Tubas e Eufónios – APTE.
