Filipe Coelho

Trumpet

Filipe Coelho began his musical studies with the Paços de Ferreira concert band and later entered the Escola Profissional Artística do Vale do Ave (ARTAVE), where he completed the Basic Trumpet Course under Professor Kevin Wauldron and the Complementary Course under Professor Paulo Silva. In 1998, he joined Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra (ANSO) to study trumpet with Professor David Burt. In 2003, he graduated with a degree in Orchestral Performance and was admitted to the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, where his principal teachers were two leading figures in the musical world: Reinhold Friedrich and Edward Tarr.

In 2013, he earned a Master’s degree in Music Education from Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra / Universidade Lusíada. He has attended masterclasses with Eric Aubier, Rod Franks, Philip Smith, Håkan Hardenberger, Allen Vizzutti, Pierre Thibaud, Michael Sachs, Mathias Höfs, and Reinhold Friedrich.

He participated in the 1st National Trumpet Competition in Castelo de Paiva, winning 3rd Prize in Class A (advanced level), and was awarded in the advanced category of the 1998 Prémio Jovens Músicos. During the 2013 season, he served as guest Associate Principal Trumpet with the Orquestra do Algarve. He is principal trumpet of the Lisbon Film Orchestra project and has collaborated since the 2011 season with the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra. As a guest musician, he regularly performs with some of Portugal’s leading orchestras, including the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, and Orquestra Clássica do Sul, working with numerous internationally renowned conductors. He is a founding member of the contemporary music group Lisbon Ensemble XX/XXI and also collaborates regularly with ensembles such as OrchestrUtopica, Ensemble MPMP, and Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa (GMCL).

He is a founding member of the trumpet quintet Almost6, with which he has been active since 2007, performing as a soloist with the GNR Band and recording the CD Sopros em Laboratório. With Almost6, he has appeared on RTP’s Sons da Música programme and, since 2012, has organised the biannual Almost6 International Trumpet Festival. He has performed with various chamber groups and ensembles in Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany.

As an educator, he has led numerous workshops and masterclasses across Portugal. He currently teaches trumpet at the Escola Profissional Metropolitana and at Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional.
