On 15 November at 8.30pm, Rui Campos Leitão will be a guest at the 17th APEM National Meeting 2023 – Music in Education: Inclusion in plurality, to present the MUSICAR project.
The theme chosen by the Portuguese Association for Music Education for the 2023 National Meeting aims to highlight the ethical, political and pedagogical dimensions of Music in Education when we talk about its potential for promoting inclusion.
The ethical dimension of music in inclusive education refers to the moral and ethical commitment to ensuring that all students have equal access to music, involving recognising and valuing human diversity, including cultural, social and economic, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, ability and needs differences.
The political dimension of music in inclusive education refers to changing policies and practices and providing educational policy tools to ensure that music is accessible and inclusive for all.
The practical dimension of music in inclusive education refers to the strategies and practices that are implemented so that all students can have access to musical practice, to making music. This includes adapting and managing the curriculum to meet the learning needs of students, providing additional support for students with specific needs, training teachers to work with a diversity of students and creating collaborative and inclusive learning environments.
The relevance of the role of music in promoting inclusion in education, especially when it comes to celebrating the plurality and diversity of students, is now unquestionable, as are diverse musical practices for enhancing students’ creativity and individual expression, allowing them to express themselves through music in a unique and personal way.
