Viola

Sérgio Sousa began his violin studies at the age of 8 at CEPAM (Madeira, Portugal) with Norberto Gomes. While still a violinist, he won 3rd prize in the CEPAM Children’s Competition and in 2009 switched to the viola under the guidance of Volodymyr Petryakov. He graduated from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in the class of Professor Paul Wakabayashi, where he was awarded a scholarship, and later studied for a master’s degree in music at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp with Leo de Neve, on a scholarship from the GDA Foundation.

In 2013 he won 3rd prize in the 21st Century International Art Competition and in 2017 and 2021 he won 2nd prize and Honorable Mention in the Chamber Music category of the Young Musicians Award with the Appassionato Quartet and Schelde Quartet.

Throughout his career, he has given several lessons and masterclasses with Michael Kugel, Rostyslav Kuts, Juhani Palola, Aníbal Lima, Pedro Muñoz, Pedro Meireles, Sam Barsegian, Jorge Alves, Ryszard Wóycicki, James Sleigh, Martin Outram, Sven Arne Tepl, Valentin Petrov, Guy Danel, Razvan Popovici, Steven De Roeck, Eliane Rodrigues, Sergei Edelmann, Matthias Buchholz and Diemut Poppen.

He has taken part in various projects and festivals in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Finland, England and Sweden, including the Leonardo Da Vinci European project, the exchange with Ensemble Uníssono and the Aurora Music Festival.

He frequently appears as viola tutti and sometimes as soloist with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, Lisbon Film Orchestra and Orquestra Sinfonietta da Ponta Delgada, among others, and has been invited to be a trainee with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and Symfonisch Orkest van Opera Vlaanderen.

He is currently Viola Tutti with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra and teaches violin, viola and orchestra at the Metropolitana Conservatory of Music and the Metropolitana Professional School.
