Cello

Jian Hong was born in the People’s Republic of China into a family of musicians, with her father being a violinist and her mother a singer.

She began studying the violin at the age of five, having had her first lessons with her father. Three years later she started to learn the cello. She then went to Beijing (Beijing) where she entered the city’s Central Conservatory. She was assistant to the 1st cello of the Youth Orchestra of the P.R. of China, under the direction of Maestro Muhai Tang, during which time she toured the world several times, having the opportunity to visit all European countries.

Later she was awarded a grant by the Chinese government which allowed her to move to Moscow, where she entered the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, at the time considered one of the most prestigious schools in the world. In Moscow she had the opportunity to study with Professor Gavrich. She attended masterclasses with the great cello master Paul Tortelier.

In 1991 she moved to Sweden and later became a Swedish citizen. In Sweden she was a member of the Helsinborg Orchestra. She has also collaborated with the Norrköping Orchestra and the Sinfonietta Falun. She has studied with the first cello of the Swedish Symphony Orchestra, Elemér Lavotha. In 1997 she joined the Macao Chamber Orchestra as assistant 1st violoncello and taught cello at the Macao Conservatoire.

She performs regularly in chamber music formations, with which she has presented herself in several European and Asian countries and taken part in various festivals, including the Macau International Music Festival and the China Arts Festival. She has worked with the most important conductors of the P.R. of China, such as the conductor Long Yu, the conductor Yuan Fang and the conductor Muhai Tang.

In 2001 she established a residence in Lisbon. Since then she has been a member of the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and a teacher at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra. In this orchestra she had the opportunity to work with internationally renowned conductors and musicians.

In 2011 she recorded a CD with António Fragoso’s Trio for Brilliant Classics. In October 2015 she released a CD with the complete works for violin by Frederico de Freitas, on which she collaborated in the recording of the Sonata for Violin and Cello.

Jian Hong has dual nationality, Portuguese and Swedish.
