Student of Jacques Zoon at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía (2008–2013), Rui studied as a scholarship recipient of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and the Fundación Carolina. At this school, he was awarded the diploma for Best Student in the flute class in both 2009 and 2010, presented to him by Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain.
Rui is a member of the Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, under the direction of Pedro Carneiro, with a special highlight on his participation in the project Notas de Contacto: a OCPsolidária na CERCIOEIRAS.
He was a member of the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras (2003–2006), the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (2011), and the Plural Ensemble (2013–2019). Since 2013, he has collaborated with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (Switzerland) under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Andris Nelsons, Riccardo Chailly, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jakub Hrůša, and Paavo Järvi.
As a guest musician, he has performed with various orchestras, including the Saito Kinen Orchestra (Japan), Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Norway), Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Mozart (Italy), Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa (Portugal), Orquesta Cadaqués, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Orquesta de Cámara Reina Sofía (Spain), Ensemble MidVest (Denmark), and Ensemble Perspektive (Germany). These collaborations have provided him the opportunity to work with distinguished conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, Péter Eötvös, Fabio Luisi, Zsolt Nagy, Pablo Heras-Casado, Zoltán Kocsis, and Peter Rundel.
