Luís Duarte Moreira, born in Paços de Ferreira, was born in 1993 and began his musical studies at the Banda Musical de Paços de Ferreira on the saxophone at the age of 10. In 2005, he entered the Vale do Ave Professional Artistic School (ARTAVE) in the horn class taught by Professor Hélder Vales. He completed his final recital with a maximum classification and a course average of 18 points, and was awarded the Dr Manuela Carvalho prize.
Later, in 2011, he continued his studies at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo do Porto (ESMAE) with professors Abel Pereira, Bohdan Sebestik and Nuno Vaz, completing his final degree recital with the highest distinction.
He then went on to study for a Master’s degree in Performance at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, in the class of Professor Marie-Luise Neunecker, on a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He completed the course in 2018 and was awarded the highest mark in the final exam.
During his academic career he attended numerous training courses, which enabled him to collaborate with professionals of national and international renown, including José Bernardo Silva, David Johnson, Ricardo Matosinhos, Bruno Rafael, Paulo Guerreiro, David Thompson, Szabolcs Zempléni, Will Sanders, Kerry Turner, Frøydis Ree Wekre, Rodolfo Epelde Cruz, Stefan de Leval Jezierski, Jeff Nelsen and Martin Owen.
He was honoured at the ‘Terras de La-Salette’ International Wind Instrument Competition in the Junior and Senior categories, winning 1st prize in both. In 2016, he won 2nd prize (1st prize not awarded) at the prestigious ‘Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen’ (Germany), and in 2017, 1st prize in the senior horn category at the Prémio Jovens Músicos (PJM). In 2018, he also won an Honourable Mention at the prestigious ‘Prague Spring’ competition (Czech Republic) and, in 2019, 1st prize at the Alto Minho International Wind Competition, brass category (E). He was a founding member of the Klaue Wind Quintet, with which he won 2nd prize in the Young Musicians Award (PJM) in the superior Chamber Music category in 2015.
He has been a member of the APROARTE Symphony Orchestra, ESMAE Symphony Orchestra, Gulbenkian Internship for Orchestra (EGO), Galicia Youth Symphony Orchestra (OJSG), Landesjugendorchester Bremen and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. In 2012, he was a soloist with the Fundação Orquestra Estúdio (FOE) as part of the Guimarães Capital da Cultura 2012 project and regularly collaborates with the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa (BSP), Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra XXI, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Sinfónica da Galiza (OSG), Ensemble Resonanz-Hamburgo and Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música, and from September 2018 until December 2019 he was a member of the Orquestra Sinfónica da Galiza (OSG).
At the same time, he had the opportunity to work with internationally renowned conductors and soloists.
He has performed as a soloist with the ARTAVE Orchestra, the Philharmonisches Orchester Plauen-Zwickau, the Gulbenkian Orchestra and the Portuguese Symphonic Band (BSP) and, in 2012 and 2013, he was also a tutor at the 1st and 2nd National Meeting of Young Musicians in Vieira do Minho. He has also led musical development courses at the University of Minho, the Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory of Music in Braga, the BSP Junior Festival, the Loures Conservatory of Arts, the Vale Martial Band, the Espinho Professional Music School and the Porto School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE).
He is currently a member of the Orquestra Gulbenkian as a section leader.
