The composer and double bassist Jan Dismas Zelenka, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, is portrayed in history books as a mysterious figure. The manuscripts of his works were only recovered after the Second World War, buried amongst the rubble left by the Allied bombing of Dresden. It was only then that the importance of his legacy began to be recognised. In these Trio Sonatas – so named because they comprise three distinct instrumental parts – the oboes and the bassoon take centre stage, always accompanied by the ever-present basso continuo. They were composed in the early 1720s, on the occasion of a visit by his patron to the city of Vienna.
