The Fifth Symphony is the most ‘delicate’ of all Schubert’s symphonies. Dated 1816, it combines the youthful exuberance of a nineteen-year-old musician with the precocious maturity of one of the greatest composers of all time. It is serene music, which does not rush into showy effects and draws on a style shaped by the legacy of the classical masters. This approach is particularly evident in the third movement, such are the similarities with the Minuet from Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. Indeed, it is with music by Mozart that this concert begins. The motet *Exsultate, jubilate* was composed in 1773 in Milan for one of the most virtuosic castrati of the time, Venanzio Rauzzini. We now hear the young soprano Ana Rosa, winner of the 13th Opera Singing Competition organised by the Portuguese Rotary Foundation. In between, Krišs Russman makes his debut conducting the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra in his most recent composition.
