Tickets for saleBrahms’ three string quartets demonstrate well the tension that marked his entire artistic career, between the expectation of following the classical tradition and the imperative of originality, so valued in the Romantic century. In this sense, the String Quartet No. 1, completed in 1873, makes several allusions to music from the past, but always with its own identity. Contrastingly, it is followed by the Piano Quartet No. 3 originating in 1855, at a time when Robert Schumann’s state of health impressed the young musician very closely. It was at this time that he composed this work. It is not surprising, therefore, the depressive and melancholic mood that pervades it, particularly in the first and last movements.
