We don’t always know what to expect from a percussion recital. There are so many possible instruments! There are so many ways to play them! Sound is the limit. That’s precisely what it’s all about, at least since figures such as Luigi Russolo, Igor Stravinsky and Edgard Varèse set out in the early decades of the 20th century in search of new sounds, giving prominence to instruments that had hitherto been relegated to the background. They can be bombos, tom-toms, vibraphones, marimbas… With this same desire, OML percussionist Rodrigo Azevedo is joined by Agostinho Sequeira, a musician who also graduated from the Metropolitana schools and whose career was crowned in 2020 with 1st Prize at the TROMP International Percussion Competition in the Netherlands. They perform a program that demonstrates the variety of this new world. They synthesize the orchestral grandeur of Wagner and the nostalgic lyricism of Schumann. Further east, they delve into the secrets of the music of Igor Iofe and Hui Tak-Cheung. They indulge in the experimentation and rhythmic explosion of the two emblematic Rebonds by Iannis Xenakis.
