Paulo Gaio Lima Festival

São Luiz Teatro Municipal
Sun 30 Mar 17:30

Every two years, Metropolitana set out to celebrate the cello by evoking the memory of Paulo Gaio Lima, a cellist and pedagogue who died in 2021. In 2023, the stage of the São Luiz Theatre presented the second Schostakovich concert and the second Haydn concert on successive days. Now it’s Schostakovich’s first and Schumann’s only concert. In keeping with the spirit of passing on the legacy so dear to Gaio Lima, two soloists from distant generations will perform: the young Bernardo Ferreira, winner of the first edition of the Festival Prize, and Pieter Wispelwey, a prestigious cellist with more than two dozen albums released and a professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory. To crown the festival, hundreds of children and young people from all over the country will once again join together in a large cello orchestra.
