George Enescu was born in 1881 in northern Romania. He studied in Vienna, then Paris, and became one of the most prominent figures on the European music scene throughout the first half of the 20th century. As a musician, he was extraordinarily versatile. He composed works in multiple formats, from chamber music to opera. He was also an excellent violinist, pianist and conductor. As a pedagogue, he had such illustrious pupils as Yehudi Menuhin and Dinu Lipatti. Those who knew him personally said that he had a prodigious memory and an upright, reserved and humble personality, despite his success and prestige. In this year marking seventy years since his death, the Metropolitan Soloists are dedicating an entire program to him, in different registers. They begin with the sophistication of an unfinished sonata. They continue with the stylization of traditional Romanian music. They recover the romantic inspiration of a sixteen-year-old. They end with the Chamber Symphony, the ultimate expression of creative maturity and perhaps his masterpiece.
