João Domingos Bomtempo’s Requiem Mass is a monument to our history. Sober, solidly structured, it fits in with the movement that just over 200 years ago advocated social reform in the country. The Liberal Revolution that overthrew monarchical absolutism and opened the door to constitutional rule was just around the corner. The dedication to the memory of Luís Vaz de Camões reflects the desire to recover this ideal of nationhood. As early as 1936, in Litanies to the Black Virgin, Francis Poulenc also used sacred music to give expression to a political confrontation, but in France, between conservative rural traditions and the structural reforms of the Popular Front.
