Holidays may well be a time to rest – but above all, they are an opportunity to experience something that the school routine prevents. That is why, every year during the Easter period, the Escola Profissional Metropolitana rolls up its sleeves to welcome dozens of young musicians from other schools, who join the school’s orchestral ensembles for an intense week of work and camaraderie. In the Classical Orchestra, the strings perform with pomp and circumstance French music written for theatrical productions of the second half of the 19th century. These are the ancient dances that Léo Delibes composed in 1882 for the production of Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse at the Comédie-Française. There are also four of the instrumental pieces that Georges Bizet composed in 1872 for Alphonse Daudet’s L’Arlésienne, a play that was staged at the Théâtre du Vaudeville. After the interval, the Wind Orchestra takes to the stage with fantasies of our time. With Thomas Doss, the ‘magic’ of Götzis, a picturesque village in the Austrian Alps. Next, a breath of hope, with David Maslanka. Finally, an island, a treasure, a pirate’s dream in the music of Hayato Hirose.
