The great master of romantic seduction, Frédéric Chopin favoured the intimacy of salons over large concert halls. It’s not surprising that he didn’t compose symphonies, and that the few works in which he combined orchestra and piano date from the beginning of his career, when he was seeking public recognition. He premiered his only piano concertos at the age of twenty, still in Warsaw, before moving to Paris. Inseparable from each other, and despite having had different fortunes initially, it makes perfect sense to listen to them side by side. A year and a half on from an unforgettable performance of Beethoven’s concertos, François-Frédéric Guy now presents us with the melodic designs, technical refinements and unmistakable signature of the Polish musician.
