A História do Violinista

During the First World War, Igor Stravinsky told, through music, the story of a deserter who, in exchange for his violin (his soul), made a pact with the devil to obtain a book that would grant him everything he desired. In 1998, Wynton Marsalis created a remake of this work. The composition remains eclectic; a blend of jazz, tango, blues, ragtime and waltzes. In the reimagined story, a young violinist dreams of becoming famous and, to achieve this, also makes a deal with the devil. She achieves stardom, but cannot escape dissatisfaction. There are lessons to be learnt. Happiness always demands something in return, and may even be an illusion. Sacrifice need not be the right choice, especially if we give up what is truly essential to us.
