Preparatory Program for Admission to Higher Education in Music

Course Introduction

The PPIESM at Metropolitana offers students who wish to enter higher education in music, either at a polytechnic or university, the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge in several key areas of musical studies, with an emphasis on the instrument. Through continuous contact with qualified teachers with extensive teaching experience, candidates for higher education in music can ensure they are better prepared for any degree programme with a performance component, while also benefiting from complementary training in aural training, music analysis and theory, and music history.

Audience

Students in their final year of secondary school who wish to enrol in higher education in music in the following academic year, including students from vocational education;

Students who have completed their final year of secondary school and have not enrolled in higher education in music;

M23 (over 23) students who wish to enrol in Higher Education in Music under the corresponding regime;

International students who wish to apply through the international student competition and who also wish to improve their proficiency in the Portuguese language.

Note: The programme is subject to a minimum number of students.

PPIESM Curriculum & Timetable

The programme is structured into four areas, with the following annual distribution of hours:

1- Instrument – 12 hours
2- Music Analysis and Theory – 12 hours (dedicated seminars)
3- Aural Training – 24 hours
4- History of Music – 12 hours (dedicated seminars)

 

Learning follow-up

No formative assessment plan is foreseen within the scope of the programme. However, learning will be monitored, helping students to overcome any difficulties and gain greater self-confidence.

Program Guidelines

Instrument
Preliminary concepts; technique and sound; repertoire for introduction to orchestral practice; technique and sound; interpersonal relationship management; preparation for higher education entrance exams.

 

Music Analysis and Theory
Essential terminology; harmonic analysis; genres and styles from various periods; preparation for higher education entrance exams.

 

Aural Training
Aural identification and intonation of intervals and chords; aural recognition of cadences and harmonic functions; dictation with memorisation and writing of melodies, rhythms and polyphonic excerpts, melodic and rhythmic readings; preparation for higher education entrance exams.

 

History of Music
Music and interdisciplinarity; essential concepts of periodisation, general characteristics of each era in art and culture; auditory recognition of representative works; preparation for higher education entrance exams.

 

Methodology
Practical exercises for the development of analytical, auditory and solfège skills. Contextualised presentation of analytical or historical subjects. Discussion, in class, of topics related to the syllabus. Listening to and viewing supporting materials, such as CDs, DVDs, online videos, printed materials and projections. Suggestions for encouraging students to work independently.
