The Metropolitana’s project is distinguished for promoting a particularly dynamic and comprehensive music education. In its schools, students of all ages evolve not only technically and artistically, but also as individuals, around the professional musicians of Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.

With this purpose, the Metropolitana’s Piccola Orchestra was established in the 2012/2013 school year, as part of the pedagogical program of the Metropolitana’s Music Conservatory. It works with students between the ages of six and twelve, providing them with instrumental practice in ensemble, a core subject in the training of any musician.

He is always concerned about showing the results of his learning in public. For this reason, his activity extends beyond the Metropolitana headquarters, frequently installing himself on prestigious stages in the city of Lisbon. He has already opened two “Caixa de Música” concerts at Centro Cultural de Belém’s Grand Auditorium: in May 2015, with original transcriptions of Disney movie soundtracks, and in February 2016, with the suite for wind orchestra by composer Lino Guerreiro, based on the storybook Bichos by Miguel Torga, in a solidarity concert in favor of União Zoófila, with the participation of Ana Galvão and Nuno Markl and an attendance of over a thousand people.

Thus, playing very seriously, it adds to the didactic purposes a citizenship awareness and, always, the ability to enchant audiences with orchestral repertoire of great effect.
