Flute

Sofia Cosme has been a flutist and transverse flute teacher since 1999. Born in Lisbon, she graduated in this city, first at the Escola de M,úsica do Conservatório NAcional then at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, completing her bachelor’s degree in 2002. She was a scholarship holder at the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa/Erasmus Programme, completing part of her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 1998. Interested from an early age in both improving her skills as a performer and teaching her instrument, she participated in flute courses and masterclasses with renowned teachers such as Trevor Wye, William Bennett, Patrick Gallois, Istvan Matuz, Jaime Martin, W. Hazelzet and M. Hantai, among others. After completing her studies, she lived in Malaysia between 1999 and 2001, working with the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra, where she also taught flute and chamber music at various educational institutions in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. He was a guest musician with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Penang State Symphony Orchestra (with which he performed as a soloist on a tour of Australia) and the Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra.

She has taught flute at various schools and conservatories in Lisbon, Tomar, and Cascais, and is currently a teacher at the Conservatório de Música da Metropolitana (since 2002), where she also performs pedagogical coordination duties, at St. Julian’s School (since 2003), the Vitorino Matono Music Institute (since 2013) and the Telheiras Music Academy (since 2020). She has also taught several intensive courses and workshops on flute and orchestra (such as three editions of the Junior Music Festival and two of the Médio Tejo Wind Orchestra). In the field of Music Pedagogy/Musical Instruments, he has published a scientific article in the Revista Portuguesa de Educação Artística (Portuguese Journal of Artistic Education, a peer-reviewed journal) entitled ‘The personal relationship between teachers and students in individual instrument/singing lessons in Portugal and its influence on the student’s musical journey: a case study’ (Journal No. 2, 2012).

At the same time, he has frequently collaborated with the Orquestra Gulbenkian as a guest musician (since 2002) and with the Orquestra do Algarve (now the Orquestra Clássica do Sul), with which he collaborated very frequently between 2007 and 2010 (and again in 2019) and toured Brussels and Vienna with the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa, the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra do Norte and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, as well as with various chamber music groups, including the Glitter Flute Quartet. In 2013, she completed a professional Master’s degree in Music Teaching – specialising in Flute – at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in partnership with Universidade Lusíada. He also completed a Bachelor’s degree in Early Music – Traverso at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (2015) and a Master’s degree in Performance (Early Music – Traverso) at ESMAE (Porto) in 2017. In this same area, he has already played as a guest musician with groups such as Os Músicos do Tejo, Concerto Ibérico, Ensemble Arabesco, Gli Accenti and Ars Eloquentia, a group to which he belongs and with which he performs frequently.
