Trumpet

Rui Borba was born in Alcochete in 1970. At the age of eleven, he joined the Banda da Sociedade Imparcial 15 de Janeiro de 1898. In 1986, he entered the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa, studying trumpet with Nelson Rocha and chamber music with José Augusto Carneiro. He attended masterclasses with trumpeters Bruno Nouvion, Allen Vizzutti, Thomas Stevens, Mathias Höfs, Michael Sachs, Håkan Hardenberger, Giuliano Sommerhalder, Marco Pierobon, Gábor Tarkövi, Jeroen Berwaerts, and Kristian Steenstrup.

In 1988, he competed in the Juventude Musical Portuguesa competitions, obtaining 1st prize ex aequo in the Intermediate Level (ages 16 to 20). In 1989, he auditioned for the Banda Sinfónica da Guarda Nacional Republicana. For two years, he was a member of the European Union Harmony Orchestra, touring Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium. He has collaborated with some of the most important Portuguese orchestras, including the now-defunct Orquestras da RDP and Teatro de São Carlos, the Orquestra Gulbenkian, the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, and Orquestra Sinfonia B, and is currently Second Trumpet with the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa.

At present, he has been a trumpet teacher at the Escola Profissional de Artes da Beira Interior (Covilhã) since the 1997/98 academic year. He holds a Master’s degree in Music Education from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
