Pedro Neves

ORCHESTRA REPERTOIRE AND EXCERPTS (CELLO)

Pedro Neves is Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Clássica de Espinho, a professor at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra and a doctoral candidate at the University of Évora, with the object of study being the six Symphonies by Joly Braga Santos. He was born in Águeda and began his musical career at the Conservatório de Aveiro, where he studied cello with Isabel Boiça. He was also a student of Paulo Gaio Lima at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra and, with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, studied with Marçal Cervera at the Juan Pedro Carrero Music School, in Barcelona. He was awarded in the Portuguese Musical Youth competition and in the Young Musicians Award. He studied orchestral direction with Jean-Marc Burfin, at the Superior National Academy of Orchestra, and with Emílio Pomàrico, in Milan. In 2006 and 2008, he was assistant conductor of conductor Michael Zilm. He was Principal Conductor of Orquestra do Algarve, Guest Conductor of Orquestra Gulbenkian, and is a regular guest of the main Portuguese orchestras. He also directed the Joensuu City Orchestra (Finland) and the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (Brazil). In 2012, he collaborated for the first time with the National Ballet Company, having directed Tchaikovsky’s A Sleeping Beauty. In the field of contemporary music, he collaborates with the Sond’arte Electric Ensemble, having directed the premieres of works by Portuguese and foreign composers. With the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group and with the Remix Ensemble – Casa da Música, he toured South Korea and Japan. He is the founder of Camerata Alma Mater, which is dedicated to interpreting the repertoire for string orchestra.
