Gil Gonçalves

Tuba

Gil Gonçalves was born in Samora Correia in 1983. He studied at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa and at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra, where he completed his undergraduate degree. Later, he continued his musical studies with François Thuillier at the Conservatoire de Musique d’Amiens in France. In 2016, he completed his Master’s degree at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He has participated in several masterclasses with internationally renowned tuba players.

He was selected as a semifinalist at the “International Tuba-Euphonium Conference 2006” competition in the United States, in the solo tuba and jazz categories. In 2008, he won first prize (senior category) at the Concurso Nacional de Instrumentos de Sopro “Terras de la Salette” and was also a semifinalist at the International Solo Tuba Competition in Markneukirchen, Germany.

He was selected to join the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (France) and conducted a workshop in Finland, where he also performed as a guest musician with the UMO Jazz Orchestra. He regularly collaborates with the main orchestras in Portugal.

In the field of jazz and other musical genres, he is a member of the world music band Kumpania Algazarra, singer Luísa Sobral’s project, the dixieland band Dixie Gang, the improvised music ensembles Suspensão and IKB, and is a founding member of the bands On Dixie, Shake It Brass, Ignition, New Music Collective, and the project SubWoof3r with tubist Sérgio Carolino.

He is currently a Miraphone artist and teaches at the Universidade de Évora, Conservatório de Música de Palmela, Conservatório Regional Silva Marques, and Escola Profissional Metropolitana.
